Frequently Asked Questions

WHY IS IT CALLED CAKE?

CAKE stands for : Coffee And Kindness Everyday. We believe that both (coffee and kindness) are best, when shared. Including both in your day-to-day life can only be a good thing.

HOW MUCH CAFFEINE IS IN EACH CAN?

It’s tricky to give an exact answer. Coffee beans are, in fact, seeds of a fruit (the coffee cherry). Because of that, caffeine levels can fluctuate quite a lot in one yield. It’s nature, and nature is never exact.

Added to that, our proprietary extraction process means that caffeine is being pulled out of a whole bunch of beans, at the same time. That’s tough to monitor. It’s a bit like asking how many antioxidants are in a punnet of blueberries, when you combine them with dozens of punnets of blueberries.

We do track extraction though, which has to do with water solubility and a bunch of other coffee-geek-y stuff. In short, the caffeine levels we give on our cans are an indication of the highest possible amount. It may well be less but we would like to err on the side of caution and say that the can you’re drinking could contain this much caffeine (not that it necessarily does.)

As a ballpark indication, what we would say is:

ICED BLACK: Double espresso

ICED WHITE: Double shot flat white

SPARKLING TONIC: Single shot of espresso, diluted with mixer.

IS CAKE GOOD FOR VEGANS?

Our Iced Black and Iced White are both vegan. The Sparkling Tonic is not vegan, as we use honey to help reduce the tonic into our customised syrup.

DOES CAKE CONTAIN SUGAR?

There is no sugar added to our Iced Black and Iced White (the Iced White uses an oat milk that does not contain sugar as an ingredient). There is a small amount of sugar used in our sparkling tonic but it still comes in at 23.6kcal/100ml, which we believe still falls into the scientific, drink-it-in-the-sun-with-no-guilt category.

WHY ARE THE ICED BLACK AND ICED WHITE A BIT...FOAMY (?) WHEN OPENING.

Both of these drinks are nitrogen-flushed. This adds an amazing body to the drink (think Guinness) and a complexity that you won't get from regular cold brew. Don't be shy to give the cans a bit of a shake before opening (not too wild, or they will spill when opening.) If you pour them into a glass you will even see a creamy, textural head on top of the coffee.

What do you mean “sparkling” for the tonic drink?

The sparkling tonic is different to the drinks mentioned above, as it is carbonated. Like…literally fizzy. We use a tonic syrup made in-house and mix it with our cold brew to achieve this. Don't shake this one! Just crack it open and enjoy the fresh, bubbly coffee.

WHERE IS CAKE MADE?

We have a roastery and a cannery in Poland handling production.

TELL ME ABOUT CAKE'S SOURCING?

We work with some wonderful farms, in Brazil. Our roasting partners buy coffee directly from Henrique Dias, in the Minas Gerais region, about 2 hours away from Belo Horizonte. They are famous for their sustainable practices and just recently won a Specialty Coffee Association Sustainability Award. Sancoffee uses all the modern knowledge to grow their coffees, which includes things like natural fertilizers, new types of packaging, satellite pics to monitor their farms, etc. They also conduct an education program including scholarships for farmers' children as well as building kindergartens and schools. The CEO of Sancofee is Fabricio Andrade, a great person and the face of the entire project. It is a warm-and-fuzzy story and one that we are proud to be associated with.

What coffee do you use?

Glad you asked. And, honestly, we could geek out about the coffee for hours. For days. The important thing to know is that it's a naturally processed, Yellow Bourbon from Samambaia. Samambaia is a part of Sancoffee - a cooperative of producers established by Henrique. The favour profile is what you’d expect from a pulped natural Brazil: big chocolate notes with natural sweetness and a smooth, mellow, caramel undertone. We believe it works perfectly with our three products, as it adds a good balance and just enough acidity.
